SBYRC was chartered in 1964 to allow racers an alternative to the traditional “landed “yacht club and lengthy application process. Membership in SBYRC can be accomplished in less than 30 days.

To enter a sailboat race, membership in a yacht club recognized by The United States Sailing Association (USSA), The Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA), or the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs is required (ASMBYC).

South Bay Yacht Racing Club is a member of each of the above mentioned yachting organizations as well as The California Marine Parks and Harbor Association, The National Federation of Boating and The Recreational Boaters of California (two lobbying associations).

South Bay Yacht Racing Club supports the yachting community in many more ways. We hold educational seminars, sailboat races and share in the maintenance of the racing buoys we use.

Race management does not begin and end with running a race. Establishing a race calendar, having monthly meetings, purchasing and maintaining marks, flags, computers, printers and trophies are just part of what a yacht club is about.

The vast majority of our membership dues are returned directly to the racing community, through educational events, sailboat races, hospitality costs and fees and through support of the organizations important to boating.

South Bay Yacht Racing Club is one of the very few clubs that is run by active racers. We exist solely, to support yacht racing.

There are many opportunities for you to help SBYRC stay a successful club. Consider joining a race committee, it is a wonderful opportunity to learn rules, and observe the tactics of successful racers, all by spending an afternoon on the water. If you want input in the future of your club please consider a position on the board.
