SBYRC Presents the 41st Annual Champagne Series Regatta

Two Saturdays, January 25 and February 8, 2014

The South Bay Yacht Racing Club (SBYRC) is sponsoring the 41st Annual Champagne Series Regatta, to be held in the waters just outside Marina del Rey.  The regatta will be held on two Saturdays, January 25 and February 8.  The dates are pushed back two weeks from previous years in the hope of better winter wind.

The event kicks off SBYRC’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. The Champagne Series is a major event for SBYRC every year, and is their first event of the season.

Champagne Series racing classes will include buoy racing for PHRF and One-Designs on January 25.  They will be joined by Cruiser classes in a long random-leg race on February 8.  The buoy racing will use the permanent marks outside the Marina breakwater.  The random-leg race will begin outside, go around the marks and will finish inside at Burton Chase Park.

Both days’ racing will be followed by hospitality at a local yacht club.  Prizes will be awarded to winners at the February 8 party.

For more information on this event or to schedule an interview please email Greg Rutter at, or call at 206.551.9090.

WOW-WAH 2013 wrap up

The 2013 WOW-WAH Regatta was again a successful event, with over 50 women racing in three classes.
Winds ranged from 6-8 kts on Saturday, and held 7-9 kts on Sunday, with overcast and some fog making for challenging navigation in the later afternoons.  The WOW fleet was particularly competitive, with a general recall needed to start one race, and only 2 points separating most competitors over 5 races.
Winners were:
WOW – Sandbox (Skipper: Jennifer Arrington)
WAH Performance – Aquabella (Skipper: Helen Brierley)
WAH Cruising – Yassoo (Skipper: Judy Alfter)
Congratulations to everyone who raced.  Special thanks to Event Chair Sasha Zaripov for her tireless multi-tasking, and to everyone who worked to make this event a success.

Women On the Water / Women At the Helm 2013

Women on the Water, Women on the Helm 2013

WOW/WAH will be held August 24 and 25, 2013. It is an annual two-day
regatta on Santa Monica Bay promoting and encouraging women to sail,
race and take the helm! Races are held over one weekend on both
Saturday and Sunday. The regatta is sponsored by several clubs in
Marina del Rey, including ASMBYC, WSA, SBYRC, PMYC & MVYC

The WOW/WAH regatta has two divisions: Women on Water (WOW) – composed
of all female teams and Women at the Helm (WAH) – composed of co-ed
teams with a female driver. Both divisions race the same weekend in
one regatta. Each division may have multiple classes, depending on
entries. Each division will race in the same general area of Santa
Monica Bay, but have separate starts and may have different courses.

Any kind of boat can enter; trophies are awarded and parties are held
after each day of racing. Visit the WOW/WAH page on, via email or join the WOW/WAH Group
on Facebook.

Pas de Deux 2013

The Pas de Deux regatta is an annual “must do” on many race calendars.  Racers know they’ll have their hands full for the entire time in this random-leg, around Santa Monica Bay event; the course may even include King Harbor.  The event is open to any boat that can safely be handled with a crew of two, with classes for PHRF and Cruisers (spinnaker optional).
