Although 2007 begins the NEW YEAR for South Bay Yacht Racing Club, we could not wait until then to show you our new website.
The new website will let members keep in touch with other members, Complete and submit entry forms, enter events, read our new newsletter and list items for sale in the new classified section on- line.
It will also be the new conduit for communication between the membership and the yacht club. Direct mailings will be done via email and the entire roster will be available through this website.

SBYRC START CLINIC SATURDAY JUNE 14th
On Saturday June 14th, the South Bay Yacht Racing Club (SBYRC) is conducting its yearly START CLINIC at the South Corinthian Yacht Club at 13445 Mindanao Way, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292 Tel (310) 306-2787
Don’t miss it; a good start is crucial to a successful race.
Registration for the event will start at 8.15am and the fee to attend is fixed at $10 payable at the door. Breakfast will be available and the clinic will start at 9.00am sharp.
During the morning we will have video presentation on the starting rules and guest speakers from different classes to present strategies and answer any questions.
Following the lunch break, sailors will meet on the water just outside the marina to practice starting sequences. Boats will be available or you can sail your own.
We will all meet back at the club to watch videos of the starts, receive prizes, and enjoy the company of new friends.

Dear Friends,
It was a big win for SBYRC in this years Newport Beach, CA to Ensenada, MX yacht race.
The race, number 61 for this great West Coast yachting tradition, was again plagued with light air as a high pressure settled over Southern California Friday afternoon. At 1300 hrs on Saturday, 24 hours after the start, only 33 boats had finished the 125 mile down wind course. Many of the trophy finishers didn't sail in to Ensenada until almost midnight on Saturday...making it again, for the second year running, one of the slowest races of this popular regatta.
The South Bay Yacht Racing Club, tied with BCYC...for the 'Most first place finishers' the Jeff Deaver trophy. A list of all SBYRC winners are listed below. Congratulation to all SBYRC entrants and trophy winners.

Opening Day, 2008 SBYRC board.

With the wind blowing at a steady 25 knots, the ceremony at Marina Venice yacht club was challenging but under control. We saw it as a sign of a great season to come on the water.
Marina Venice Commodore Timothy Sheehan and South Bay Yacht Racing Club Commodore James Cash did an excellent job greeting the many dignitaries attending our ceremony and presenting the clubs many scheduled events of the coming year.
The live band, champagne and strawberries were much appreciated by all the guests.
Thank you very much to all of you who came to attend the ceremony. Remember this is your club and we need to hear from you.
Send us an email with your suggestions or come to attend our monthly meetings the first Monday of each month at Marina Venice Yacht Club- level G1- at 6.30pm.
We always need help to run our events and by helping on a Race committee boat we all become better sailors and create lasting friendships.

Dear Champagne Series Racers,
The Board and members of the South Bay Yacht Racing Club thank all the 36 entrants to the 2008 Champagne Series for helping make this event a fun race series and successful multi-day hospitality event.
There were several special challenges to the race committee this year, not the least of which was the lack of wind on the first day, and the precarious weather prediction and prevailing winds opposite to the norm on day two.
Additionally, this year we had challenges with our scoring procedures that resulted in having to change the originally announced perpetual trophies, and delays in posting the final results on our website. We apologize for any angst this may have caused anyone and have already taken action to correct the problem for all future SBYRC sponsored events.
We especially want to thank all of you that have taken your time to share your thought, concerns, and very valuable suggestions for improvements. It was this kind of input that resulted in changing this year’s format from the traditional 3-day, to the 2-day event that all have said is much more manageable. We invite your suggestions for improving our events in the future and welcome your continued support.

ASMBYA's Cruiser Fleet Chairman Stu Coleman hosted a meeting with all local yacht club race chairs.
The objective was to try to make one set of standard handicap rules for all ASMBYC yacht clubs.
We were expecting a heated
and never-ending debate.
What actually happened was a well organized, and very well behaved group of cruiser racer and chairpersons
discussing the handicapping like grown adults.
Amazing!! By the end of the meeting, an entire set of handicap rules was formed and agreed to, pending yacht club board approval.
What was decided on is more modern and up to date reflecting more modern boats, such as the new set of cruiser sprits and their related deductions.
On February 21, Stu will be hosting another meeting aimed more at the cruiser racer and what the Cruiser Class should be or should become.
This event will be at Del Rey Yacht Club at 7:00pm. Please look for the handicap information on our website: www.sbyrc.org .

The 2007 South Bay Yacht Racing Club Bridge, would like to ask that you join us for our annual business meeting and installation of the 2008 SBYRC Bridge on DECEMBER 7TH 2007.
The evening will start with a brief general membership meeting followed by the presentation of SBYRC members who have proved to excel in racing this year. Next, the SBYRC Service Award will be presented to an individual that has contributed greatly, to the success of our events in 2007.
The program will feature SBYRC Rear Commodore Arnaud Massonnat presenting his family outing in French Polynesia for the Pearl Regatta event last May.
The cost of dinner will be $40.00 per person. SBYRC will be providing wine during dinner.
We are offering the following menus and desserts:

On September 29 and 30, 2007, South Bay Yacht Racing Club hosted the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs Champion of Champions Regatta.
The primary sponsors are Elliott Pattison Sailmakers and the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation.
Along with individual donations, $2.00 was donated from every entry to the Colon Cancer Alliance, hospitality host Pacific Mariners Yacht Club's primary charity.
West Marine, Ship Store, Tony P’s restaurant, Sailing Sportboats, Multimarine and Ignacio "Nacho" Serna were all very generous with their raffle gifts.
West Marine's raffle items included foul weather gear, tool kits and a handheld GPS chartplotter.
SBYRC Commodore Jerome Sammarcelli and Sailing Sportboat donated a Tacktik digital compass while Tony P's gave us lots of gift certificates for meals.
33 boats competed in the 5 races that were held in light, shifty condidions.
The 6 boat A fleet (PHRF 12-39) included 3 Farr 40s, a new Antrim 40, a Farr 395 and 44.
The Baran's new Antrim 40, XL prevailed over David Voss's new Pirahna. The two were often nearly overlapped at the marks, with their final scores being 8 and 9.
White Knight and Ghost each managed a second place race finish.
2006 PHRF B and Overall winner Hot Rum, struggled with ASMBYC V/C's Bill Webster's Sidekick and Duncan & Paula Cameron's Trust Me. Each won a race and in the end all three were seperated by 2 points.
Trust Me took first while Sidekick won the tie breaeker for second.
The 7 boat PHRF C Fleet had four 138 raters.
There is a strong trend for narrow band classes in Santa Monica Bay and PHRF C had four 138 raters.
Shawn Ivie's Friction Loss, Brack Duker's Velerito and Jerry and Lea Kaye's C&C 25 Misque finished in that order for the series.
The sportboat class included, ASMBYC and SBYRC S/C John Staff's new Viper 830-Plankton, Mick Shlesn Melges 30-Blade,the Mahaffeys Mumm 30-Cuvee Caliente and Star man Skip & fiance Monica's new Mumm 30-Clockwork.
Plankton won 4 of the 5 races while Cuvee and Clockwork ended up tied after a long battle.
S/C John Staff also won the "Jack Webber Trophy" for the overall!
Two new Mumm 30's are expected to join the fleet in he very near future.
We had a great party on Saturday with a great Chicago blues band and a $2.00 Bar B Que.

This is an invitational regatta that includes only the “best of the best” performing racers from specific qualifying races held throughout the year in both Marina del Rey and King Harbor.
This regatta features the best performing skippers and crews from PHRF, One Design, Sportboat, Multihull and Cruising Class classes. Pacific Mariners Yacht Club will be the location for the “on shore” portion of this great event.
Please join us Saturday night for dinner and a live band, and on Sunday for hospitality and the awards presentation. |

| Transpacific Race !
SBYRC Member Chris Slagerman and his crew arrived yesterday in Hawai. Finish time 07/27/07 at 8:36:00 just behind Ragtime.
Chris and "Cheetah" his 68 footer had a great close racing with well know Ragtime during the entire race.
Congratulations to the entire crew for making it.

This year again, SBYRC have made a BEST OF selection of our local racers. If you are racing in Los Angeles area or in Southern California, you must know them. If you don't, then the START CLINIC is your opportunity to understand why they are so good and so far ahead of us...right from the START.
Jayne Belliveau is the only "newbie" of the pack. Nobody knows her ...yet. However, having sailed with her a few times already, I can tell you that she knows how to take start...make sure you have good insurance, she will not back off!
John Staff, one of the greatest champion in Southern California is currently preparing his next rocket boat, a Viper 830....once again, he will be soon at the start of a super fast sportboat. Sportboats are a different breed of boats and his starting sequences are pure adrenalin!!
Jim Durden, Champion of Champions!! How could we have a seminar without Jim. At the helm of "Zip", his Martin 242, Jim will tell us how he makes sure to get clean air in a fleet of 20 + boats!
Werner Horn is the typical Northern European style: quiet but efficient. Werner and Susan aboard of their J24 are getting ready for the J24 National in Marina Del Rey this summer. I am sure we will learn a few tricks from Werner !! ;-)
Zoltan Zatinsky, from CBYC will also join us and talk about how to cross the line at the sound of the gun with a 40 foot Farr 40 sailing full speed. Obviously, this requires some serious skills and training. Zoltan will be there to explain how he and his crew manage the stress and the 5 minutes prior to the start!
At last, but not least, Bruce Fleck (we hope he can make it) will let us know how a 30 year old Santana 20 kicks everybody butts on the race course. Again, this is all in the start. Bruce also recently joined the Lido fleet and will share with us his experience on dinghy starts.
I could not hope for better guest speakers.
From 9:30 am - noon, feel free to shoot as many questions as you like.
Breakfast will be provided at SCCYC.
In the afternoon, if enough boats are willing to go out, we will have a on the water session of starting sequences.

Hanging in there!
Jr S/C Rick Ruskin, shown steering his Farr designed Beneteau 42S7 Farr Gone, to a 1st in PHRF A2 and 5th overall in the Berger Pt. Dume race. Thanks to Pat Reynolds for a great photo!
2 weeks earlier, in the 60th Newport to Ensenada Race, Rick was 1st to finish in PHRF G. After 33 hours of racing, Farr Gone was corrected on by 3 minutes 15 seconds to place 2nd in class!
Congratulations to Rick and his crew, managing to find wind and keep the boat moving!
SBYRC member Thomas Jannetta (Choate 40), also in PHRF G, hung in there for 45 hours to finish. Less than 1/2 of the 450 + entries did not finish. Congratulations to Thomas and crew for not quiting!

SBYRC members get 1st and 2nd place during Berger 3 race!
Everywhere we look, you can be sure to find a member of SBYRC!
Berger # 3 (MDR - Point Dume - MDR) was taking place last Saturday. With about 50 boats on the water, the race was following the usual wind patterns with light breeze going to Point Dume and better winds sailing back.
Geoff Deutschmann, very well known racer in the Multihulls scene (he won the Berger Series more than once and usually places in the top 3 in any long distance races, including N2E and SB-KH) got 2nd place last Saturday aboard is 27 foot cat Tyger Tyger with crew Mike Georgia and Scott Smith.

Even better: Chris Slagerman decided that same day to take the Firebird (26 foot carbon fiber catamaran) out and finished at the top of the podium ahead of Geoff!!

Gary Green, Commodore of MVYC, would like to invite all SBYRC members to participate in the Dr. Robert Baker Regatta set for Sunday, April 22.
PHRF, One-Design and Cruiser classes are all invited. Dual scoring and prizes will be offered for those using this regatta to "tune up" for the Women on Water/Women at the Helm regatta in July.
The format is three races in one day (two for cruisers) with great hospitality afterwards at Marina Venice YC.

Les Storrs Race, organized by South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club
The weekend of March 24th - 25th was very active down in Marina Del Rey where SCCYC hosted their annual Les Storrs Regatta. With two PHRF classes and four One Design classes, this race confirmed that One Design Racing is coming back strong this year in Santa Monica Bay area (SBYRC had four One Design classes during the 2007 Champagne Series).
Until all the results are published, we will congratulates SBYRC members racing on the Open 5.70s with Commodore Jerome Sammarcelli, winning overall, and Arnaud Massonnat (R/C) and Jeff Burne (SBYRC member), both crewing for Tracey Kenney (SCCYC R/C) in 2nd place.

The Sheriff's boat and Coast guards showed off their driving skills in commuting guests between various Yacht Clubs. .
CYC Commodore Frank Glynn gave a delightful speech celebrating the new racing season but also St Patrick's day while drinking a big glass of Irish Whisky under the cheers of the crowd. |

OPENING DAY 2007
Here it is folks, the season is officially open. As SBYRC Vice Commodore Jim Cash is calling the names of attending dignitaries, SBYRC Commodore Jerome Sammarcelli is joined by MVYC Commodore Gary Green in saluting the guests. .

Dear Members,
As many of you know, the SCYA Midwinter Regatta is approaching.
More than 40 yacht clubs along Southern California are hosting races on the weekend of Feb. 17th-18th.
Lee Roads, Race Chairman of Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club, asked me if one or two members of SBYRC could help on SMWYC Chase Boat.
For those of you who have never done it, the job is a lot of fun. You will obviously have to "work" a bit and set the marks according to the Race Committee's instructions but will also have the best view of the boats, starting and racing during the day.
SMWYC' chase boat is very safe and. You will not have to steer the boat but will be assisting the driver.

Tomorrow (Feb. 3rd) is the last day of the 2007 Champagne Series!
The photo above (taken by Pat Reynolds) shows J80's "Avet" with Skipper Curt Johnson (CYC) and Monique White (SBYRC Treasurer) and Lauren Turner (SBYRC Member).
Avet is currently in 3rd place in the J80 Class.
Join us on the race course or after the race and meet all the racers at Marina Venice Yacht Club for food and drinks.
The Trophies Ceremony will take place at the G3 level of MVYC.

Dear Members and racers,
DRYC was hosting last Saturday the first race of the Berger/Stein Series. Racers were sailing from MDR to Malibu and back...a 22nm race!
Congratulations to SBYRC member Bill Worthington who finished first in his class (PHRF A2 - rating 60-93) out of 22 racers on his Beneteau 36.7!
Well done Bill and good luck for the rest of the Series!
